CONTACT
2000 provides a unique way of applying chemicals to tall
weed plants. The basic principles are to apply a much
smaller amount of chemical in slightly more concentrated
form, but in a controlled and safe way under a protective
hood.
Contact 2000 is the first contact weed wiping system to use
a contra-rotating brush as the means of applying chemical
to the target plant.
The nature of the brush is fundamental to the success of
the contact system. Its bristles are made of a special material
that absorbs chemical yet holds its shape when ‘combed’ through
even dense tough plants, achieving high levels of contact.
The total amount of liquid absorbed by the brush to saturation
point is approximately 5 litres, which is considerable, and
allows a wide band of safety to be used in the guidelines
for the operator to achieve excellent results.
The use of low ground pressure wheels and tyres is important,
as they are very robust, are designed to work in very soft
ground where other wiping systems could not operate and provide
suspension for the unit in rough conditions.
Bracken, rush or general tall weed problems can all be dealt
with, only applying chemical to the target weed, resulting
in tremendous cost savings as well as protecting vulnerable
plants such as clover.
Contact 2000 has a unique control system that allows the
operator to match weed density and forward speed, to application
rate. The units of 2.5m used in single form or in multiples
are very easy to use, can cover a lot of ground quickly and
provide a safe environment for operator, farm animals and
wildlife.
Chemical supply is provided by any suitable On Board Sprayer.
This system can be used behind any suitable towing vehicle,
from an ATV to a tractor, 4 x 4, 6 x 6, or specialist all
terrain vehicle.
The results of this method over the last 7 years
have proved the system achieves excellent results with drastic
reductions
of chemical use and most of all - reduced costs.

UPLAND
FARMERS / GAMEKEEPERS are treating thick infestations
of bracken with as little as 0.3 litre / acre (0.75
lt /Ha) of Roundup® chemical, applied
at 20:1 concentration. The application is very safe,
particularly next to watercourses, due to the protective
nature of the hood. Rushes are being systematically
controlled over a 3 year period or even quicker if
cutting is part of the plan |
| |
DAIRY
FARMERS are using this system to control nettles,
thistles and other taller weeds in grazing pastures
and docks as they emerge from silage aftermaths. |
| |
BEEF
and SHEEP FARMERS are controlling various
annual weeds, as well as thistles, nettles and patches
of bracken or rushes throughout the farm while protecting
valuable clover. |
| |
FORESTERS are
able to use the 1.5metre model to carry out routine weed
control between rows of nursery trees to ensure the best
start for them at least cost. |
|
 |
COMPETITION
Now that you know the principles of this type of weed control
and the money saving benefits to be had, you will see that
the alternative methods on the market don’t measure
up to Logic’s Contact 2000 design. |
 |
| |
PENETRATION is
the controlling factor with any successful wiping system,
especially in heavy infestations. The Contact 2000 contra-rotating
bristles get right to the heart of the plant mass, depositing
chemical on the more absorbent non-waxy underside of
the plants leaves.
Other systems using carpet or wicks DO NOT have the same penetration into
plants therefore cannot get enough contact. |
| |
HEIGHT
ADJUSTMENT should be easy, to get the best
out of any situation as the conditions or target height
change. The body of Contact 2000 is spring suspended
from the drawbar frame. This feature allows ultra-
quick height adjustment, simply by pulling out the
height adjustment pin and pushing the body up or down
to the desired position, including the highest transport
position, then releasing the pin to lock off. All in
a matter of 2-3 seconds.
Other systems on the market are not as simple and involve turnbuckles or
the use of spanners, which can take a long time |
|
 |
| |
CHEMICAL
APPLICATION on Contact 2000 features a 7 nozzle
spray boom above the brush that delivers 0.5 or half
litre of chemical mixture evenly over the width of
the brush
at a variable time interval, depending on the level
of weed infestation. Some other systems use a reservoir
in which the roller runs, to pick up a specially thickened
chemical mixture. This has problems when working on
hillsides as the chemical gravitates to one end leaving
one end dry and the other overcharged. Some systems
use a dribble bar to charge the carpet roller, this
too has problems on slopes with uneven discharge. |
| |
DRAWBAR design
plays an important part in presenting plants to the wiping
brush. With Contact 2000 the “swan-neck” design
does not flatten any well grown plants and it is very
easily moved to either side to give an offset towing
position. This can be very useful for operator vision
or working close to trees etc.
Other types of wiper generally have low-slung drawbars that can push down
foliage therefore reducing the effectiveness of the wiping system. Most
other wiping systems do not offer an offset drawbar facility. |
| |
FLOTATION
WHEELS are standard on Contact 2000, which
allows use in soft ground conditions and gives the
whole unit a basic suspension. The wheels are also
positioned in-board so that they do not run down the
next pass of plants to be treated. Chemical transfer
from plant to wheel to ground is not a problem and
is outweighed by all the advantages, if it had been
a problem, we would have done something about it years
ago. |
| |
DAMAGE
PREVENTION is an important consideration when
using these machines in often very rough conditions.
The brush on Contact 2000 has a narrow core, which
helps prevent damage with protection from a layer of
bristles. Even so if damage is sustained, this is easily
repaired with individual brush sections at minimum
cost.
Systems that use sizeable carpeted rollers run the risk of tearing the
cover or damaging the roller. Wick systems can sustain tearing or removal
of material from the framework. Rollers working in a reservoir run the
risk of damage and subsequent serious leaking. |
| |
FULLY
GUARDED BELT DRIVE featured on all Contact
2000 models prevents any damage and keeps the belt
dry for maximum grip. The belt itself is a specially
designed segmented type, to transfer drive with no
slipping and which can be shortened to maintain tension
when the time comes. Some wiping systems don’t
use any belts but rely on gears or wicks. Those that
do, don’t use special belts and are unprotected
in some cases, leading to trash collection and eventual
slipping. |
|
 |
| |
MAINTENANCE access
is easy on Contact 2000 as the hood rear panel can be
easily removed via 2 hand screws, to reveal the whole
brush and spray-line for inspection. Other systems can
be accessed but not as easily, some requiring tools to
do it. |
| |
IN-LINE
FILTER leading
to the spray-line is standard on Contact 2000, which
helps prevent nozzle blockages. This feature is important
if the unit is to be used for long days away from a
domestic water supply. It is often the case that the
operator will only carry chemicals and use a drinking
trough or stream to re-fill the sprayer tank, rather
than carry quantities of clean water. This filtration
system allows this and simplifies the job. Some other
spray-line systems don’t have this facility which
can lead to nozzle blockages and irregular re-charging
of the wiping system, leading to untreated strips. |
| |
HANDS
FREE CONTROL is a feature on Contact 2000,
which improves the safety aspect of the work. The control
box can be mounted in easy viewing of the operator
and only requires a quick press of the button for instant
re-charging, or movement of the adjustment switch,
depending on the changing application required.
Other systems require the operator to carry a hand switch to apply a re-charging
system which increases fatigue and reduces operator control of the towing
vehicle. |
| |
CHOICE
OF MODELS enables a purchaser to match his
requirements to the optimum size of unit. Logic offer
two main models, a 1.5 metre unit for small scale,
forestry, municipal, park-land and domestic use, or
a 2.5 metre unit for general agricultural use. These
can be used in gang formations, to create wider operating
widths of up to 7.5 metres, for large farms or contractor
use. |
| |
ADJUSTABLE
OPERATING PATTERNS can be achieved on the
Contact 2000 spray-line simply by turning off nozzles.
This can be very useful when treating a narrow strip
around a field headland or close to a watercourse.
Other wiping systems cannot do this easily, it’s all or nothing. |
